History

Envisioned by Lelia Sponsel, TROtt, formerly GRAD (Greenbelt Riding Association for the Disabled), was established in 1975. GRAD starting providing therapeutic horseback riding for a small number of persons with disabilities in the local Ottawa region. The program blossomed and Lelia’s vision remains evident today through our exceptional programming, our team of dedicated staff and volunteers and our incredible facility.

“I have enjoyed the challenge, the risk-taking, the learning, and, above all, the opportunity to share my sport – riding horses – with so many others.” – Lelia Sponsel, TROtt Founder

In 1982, TROtt moved to Equidae Stables (Greely, ON) owned by Gordon and Nancy Reid. The Reids are enthusiastic and fundamental supporters of the therapeutic riding program.

TROtt celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2015, and continues to grow with the enduring help of its many donors, sponsors, and volunteers.
