February’s Feature is volunteers Margaret and Da February’s Feature is volunteers Margaret and Darrell!

Margaret started volunteering with us in the fall of 2016 and Darrell started with us 2 years ago as of this summer. Margaret started with us as a sidewalker and now volunteers as a horse handler and exercise rider. Darrell started helping us when we needed a wasp’s nest removed and has since helped maintain our arenas, paddocks and so much more.

When Margaret was asked what her favourite part about TROtt is, she said, “The people who come to TRott are wonderful - the staff and TROtt executive are warm, friendly and welcoming. The riders are fun to be with and of course, very inspiring!! And the icing on the cake is being able to ride the horses and help keep them fit and 'tuned up' for their lessons.”

Darrell recently retired and has enjoyed more time to play guitar, ski, snowshoe and watch birds. Birding is something that he and Margaret are planning to do more of this year. They have made it their goal to see as many different bird species as possible. They are up to 56 so far but have to beat the 107 they saw last year. They are certainty well on their way!

When Margaret was asked about an achievement she is proud of she said, “In my previous life as a Public Servant, I had the opportunity to help create a funding program, New Horizons for Seniors, which to this day, still provides grant money to small, community based seniors organizations for worthwhile projects. It's one of the few federal programs that directly touches small communities and it was rewarding getting to know seniors across this country.”

When asked about horses Darrell said, “I love interacting with the horses at TROtt, but the tractor is the only thing I can stay on top of reliably.”

A perfect day for them is spending time with their three kids, doing the activities they love.

We are so thankful to have both Margaret and Darrell volunteer with us. Their dedication to supporting our programs and riders has been invaluable.

January’s Feature is Carine! Carine has helped January’s Feature is Carine!

Carine has helped us greatly over the past 18 months, by volunteering in the stable and caring for our horses.

As a stable volunteer, Carine helps us by cleaning the paddocks, the stalls, sweeping the floor as well as helping with whatever needs to be done at the time like taking the horses in and out for feeding, changing blankets, etc.

Carine started volunteering in the summer of 2019 after the loss of her dog. She said, “I miss being around animals but I'm not ready to have another one at the moment." She added " I enjoy being active with a purpose, being of service and being part of something greater than me. All that said, TROtt is a perfect match for me. I can spend time around horses, work along a friendly team of positive, respectful people who take such good care of their horses, their clients and their volunteers. We feel useful and appreciated.”

When she was asked about her favourite TROtt memory, she mentioned a time “When Rhonda tried to unlock the spray hose to fill the water bucket but instead ended up spraying me right in the face by accident, which gave me a very cold shower. I had a good laugh; it was quite refreshing on that hot summer day.”

When she is not at TROtt, Carine can be found staying physically active by exercising at the gym and going for long walks. She also meditates daily, enjoys learning, reading, trying new recipes and, most of all, spending quality time with friends and family.

Carine came to Canada in 1967 from Belgium. When she was nine, Carine and her sister started horseback riding. A few years later, her parents bought a farm and converted it into a stable for their horses. She said, “At an early age, I used to compete, give riding lessons, do farm work and care for the animals all of which I enjoyed very much. I love animals, horses and dogs especially.”

Prior to retirement, Carine was a school teacher for children with special needs; her specialty, children with intellectual challenges and those with visual impairments.

One of the things she is most proud of though is homeschooling her two sons for eight years.

We are so lucky to have Carine volunteering with us!
